Write Congress and ask them to pass a new bill into law that will enhance the safety of cosmetics and toiletries: The Personal Care Products Safety Act (S. 2100) in the Senate, and The Safe Cosmetics and Personal Care Products Act of 2019 (H.R. 4296 of 2019) in the House.
These bills change how chemicals in cosmetics and toiletries are reviewed and regulated. They also requires the FDA to test chemical ingredients each year to determine safety, which is incredibly important, because the vast majority of chemicals on the market have never been tested for safety! And, lastly, they require disclosure of ingredients by the manufacturers, as well as recall authority for the FDA for the first time ever.
The bills would amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938. It’s been more than 80 years since a law was passed to regulate the use of cosmetics and personal care products. You read that right, 80 YEARS!
It’s time for a change. Contact your U.S. representatives and senators today.
Below is a sample template you can copy and paste into the message form of your Congress member’s contact page:
Congress Member [XX],
I stand in full support of the bi-partisan cosmetic safety bill currently introduced. As a conscientious consumer, I want better regulation to help keep my family and I safe and protected from harmful chemicals such as benzene, formaldehyde, lead, and phthalates. These chemicals are linked to diseases and are known to be toxic, yet they are in thousands of our toiletries and cosmetics.
Additionally, research is needed on the safety of the thousands of chemicals on the market that are untested, which would also lead to safer products and healthier consumers. I urge you to support the passage of this bill and to vote to enable better regulation of the cosmetics and toiletries industry.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
