Learning about toxic chemicals in personal products is enough to make a person panic each time they open their medicine cabinet or unzip their makeup bag. But, fear not! There are many healthy alternatives to products with toxic chemicals.
We shouldn’t have to compromise health for beauty nor hygiene. You have the power to make healthy choices and call on businesses and policymakers to better protect us. Below are some effective ways to stand up and say, “No,” to toxins.
Vote with Your Dollar
Boycott toxin-laden products and vote with your dollar. You can find the good, the bad and the ugly about ingredients in your products via the databases and apps like Skin Deep, Made Safe, Think Dirty, Clearya and DetoxMe. Then, the next time you purchase a product, check the ingredients in real time and find a healthier alternative, if needed.
Clean Up Your Act
Get your gals together, and bring your cosmetics and products for a cabinet clean out party. Help each other check ingredient safety, and toss the bad apples. Next, find healthy alternatives you can swap in. Then, go shopping and get your healthy glow on!
Make One-For-One Swaps
We get it. It can be overwhelming and costly to change out your favorite products. Try swapping in a new, cleaner product each time you finish one. For a fast and easy way to find cleaner products, look for the Environmental Working Group’s EWG Verified logo, or the MadeSafe seal of approval on the back of the product.
Use Your Voice
Ask your favorite company to stop putting toxic ingredients in their products and why this matters to you. Trust us, they’re listening.
Contact Your State Legislators
After 84 years, a new Federal law to update cosmetics regulation finally passed in 2022, but states also have an important role to play in further ensuring all consumers have access to nontoxic toiletries. Contact your legislators to learn what the current policies are to ensure ingredient safety for products sold in your state.
Sharing Is Caring
Don’t hog all the clean beauty intel! Tell three to five friends about Pretty Ugly and personal product ingredient safety. They’ll thank you for being beautiful inside and out!
